Consumer Evaluations
I only drink on average 1 bottle of wine per week: 1 glass per day more than four or five days (I preserve the rest of it making use of a VacuVin or the Private Preserve technique) and also purchase somewhat cheap wines that do not call for extended aging. So this 8-bottle wine cooler from Emerson is ideal for me it also keeps me on a spending budget - I am limited to having only eight bottles of wine at any one time.
The unit itself is appealing and seems to be properly-built. The packaging is also pretty sturdy. There are two metal racks that hold 4 typical (burgundy or bordeaux) bottles each, and be aware that extended riesling or oversized Champagne bottles won't fit. Also, as opposed to some other wine coolers, you can not squeeze in a great deal more bottles by taking out the shelves and stacking bottles on top rated of 1 an additional. You're fairly substantially restricted to 8.
This cooler operates on the thermoelectric system (also known as the Peltier effect - look it up on Wikipedia), which means there is no compressor and the only moving part is a fan to circulate air. There are 3 buttons on the front manage: a single to turn on and off the led light inside, one to turn up the temperature in 1-degree increments, and one particular to turn down the temperature in comparable increments. Each time you press any of the buttons, a digital thermometer lights up to show you the internal temperature. When you press either the up or down temperature button, the thermometer also lights up to show you the desired temperature you have chosen.
When I initially plugged this in, the thermometer was in the mid 70's. I set it for 57 degrees and it took about 4 hours or so for it to get to that point. I've had this cooler for over a month now, and each time I check the temperature it is 57 degrees. The space it is in gets pretty warm, like to the low-mid 80's but so far this tiny unit has managed to sustain a continual temperature. If you keep opening and closing the door or changing wines, of course the temperature is going to vary but considering that I hardly ever open it (just when per week to get my wine of the week, and then when I add wines to it), the temperature does not vary.
So far I am really happy with this item. It is totally inadequate if you are trying to develop a wine collection, but if you will need a thing tiny just to hold your wines at the correct temperature, this fits the bill really nicely.
Addendum: It has been about 3 months due to the fact I purchased this (I truly bought another one particular a handful of weeks just after the 1st 1). I purchased a couple of digital thermometers to compare their readings with the built-in ones. The built-in thermometers say 57 degrees 99% of the time, whereas the readings on the digital standalone thermometers show readings that differ from the mid 58-degree to high 60-degree range. I reside in Southern California and it is been ridiculously hot this summer - the ambient temperature in the room where these are located gets up to 86 or 87 degrees until I get dwelling from function and turn on the air conditioner, so under the circumstances, I believe these units are performing well. I don't want to turn down the thermostat on them considering I really feel that will be also significantly of a strain. I am pleased with a level of 58-60 throughout the hot summer. Just thought I should really share this update with readers, even though - the built-in does not agree with the standalone temperature readings.
This product is no longer on the market at the time of writing this critique, but I really feel compelled to let folks know that this item went on the fritz just after about 6 months. It would nevertheless cool the wines, sort of. But with the thermostat set for 55, I would routinely come dwelling to get the temp on the display in the 60's. That, and on many occasions the wine would really feel like space temp. So, even worse than just not keeping the wine cool, it would cool it, let it warm to space temp, cool it again, etc. possibly performing a great deal more harm to my wine than if I left it in the closet.
Emerson did agree to service it beneath warranty, but only just after we shipped it to them (for $30 parcel post) and paid $15 for return shipping. Because that was more than half the replacement cost for a new cooler, we did not bother and went with a different manufacturer.
We initally were reassured by the other fantastic reviews, but maybe there is a cause they do not carry this item any longer. I have not owned any other Emerson solutions to make any statement about the general brand reliability.
