Consumer Evaluations
The fiance and I have wanted a wine cooler for a whilst and figured this would be a excellent wedding gift for ourselves. What a mistake that turned out to be. Have owned this for about a month and the bottom section keeps the red wine at a balmy 68 degrees. Fully grasp that the highest you can set it for is 64 degrees. The fans spin but it won't maintain the wine cool. Turns out it would price even more to have a repair tech appear at it than what we paid for it. If you are hunting for a good wine fridge appear elsewhere.
Acquired this model about 6 months ago it replaced a prior failed (various brand, I feel, but can't recall the name) item of the very same kind. When it operates, does so flawlessly.
Nonetheless, this Kalorik unit itself failed, exactly One year right after manufacture.
I guess unless 1 is wiling to invest upwards of $1200.00 for a bona-fide, secondary refrigerator, sanctioned only for wine storage, these thermoelectric versions are woefully lacking in either style or execution. We take pleasure in wine, but don't have the spending budget or space for a large, standalone appliance.
Spending $200.00 or far more for an appliance with a projected lifespan of much less than 12 months is absurd. Possibly a person will soon design and develop a greater product that can be afforded by ordinary joes like us. (Folks who will not invest a lot more than $40.00 or so for a bottle of wine.)
UPDATE Might 2011
Just after poking around inside the cabinet of this appliance, a bit of sleuthing turned up a tiny bit of some thing that appeared to be a burnt-out element. That tiny small element (about the size of a pencil eraser) was identified by a local t.v. repair shop as an electrical capacitor. Apparently the a single inserted in the course of manufacture is a low cost piece of crap... possibly an example of 'planned obsolesence'? At any rate, the fantastic repair man soldered in a new a single, (substantially bigger than the original) and within an hour we once once again had a operating cool cellar. $40.00 properly spent, and we'll see how long this version lasts. Way more handy and less high priced than either returning to Kalorik for repair, or getting an additional make/model.
My assistance to any individual thinking about shopping for, or getting purchased 1 of these units (by any brand name) that has died: don't be too afraid to cautiously open up the back and do some investigating. Probabilities are that probably the complete appliance has develop into useless due to the failure of a very simple $2.00-or-less portion. Of couse, it helps if you can diagnose the issue your self, but at times issues such as this are not really that challenging to do. Don't be afraid of the appliance, just make sure to unplug it 1st. We certainly would create considerably much less waste if factors had been better-engineered, and we were much less inclined to basically throw away points that no longer work, as an alternative of fixing them.
